Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hemp, particularly hemp seed oil and cannabidiol (CBD) derived from hemp, has gained attention for its potential benefits in treating acne. The scientific rationale lies primarily in hemp's anti-inflammatory properties and its effects on sebum production. Hemp seed oil is rich in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that has been shown to be deficient in the skin surface lipids of people with acne. Some small studies suggest that topical application of linoleic acid can reduce the size and severity of acne lesions.

CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory and animal studies. A notable in vitro study (Olah et al., 2014) showed that CBD can inhibit lipid synthesis in human sebocytes and exert anti-inflammatory actions, both of which are relevant to acne pathogenesis. However, clinical studies in humans are scarce, and most evidence comes from preclinical research or anecdotal reports.

There is little evidence of traditional use of hemp specifically for acne, though hemp has been used historically for various skin ailments. In summary, while there is some mechanistic and early clinical evidence supporting hemp's potential for acne management, the evidence base is limited and lacks large, high-quality clinical trials. Therefore, the overall scientific evidence supporting the use of hemp for acne can be considered modest (rated 2 out of 5).
