Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) is traditionally used in herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties, including for acne. Folk medicine in Mediterranean regions has long applied Immortelle extracts and essential oil to wounds, scars, and inflammatory skin conditions. The primary rationale for its use in acne stems from its purported antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, which are thought to help reduce the swelling and redness associated with acne lesions.

While there are some in vitro studies indicating that Helichrysum italicum essential oil possesses antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria (including Staphylococcus aureus), there is very limited direct scientific research specifically linking Immortelle or its extracts to clinical improvement in acne. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional herbal practices. No robust clinical trials have been conducted to assess its efficacy and safety for acne in humans. Therefore, its use for acne is primarily justified by tradition and supported by preliminary laboratory studies, but lacks substantial scientific validation.
