Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, Chrysanthemum has been valued for its purported anti-inflammatory, cooling, and detoxifying properties. While not a primary or classic remedy for acne, it has been used topically or as a tea to address various skin conditions, including boils, rashes, and general “heat” in the body, which some traditional systems associate with acne flares.

However, scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Indian Chrysanthemum for treating acne is minimal. A few in vitro studies have suggested antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of Chrysanthemum indicum extracts, but these have not been specifically tied to acne-causing bacteria (such as Cutibacterium acnes) or validated in human clinical trials for acne treatment. As such, its use for acne is primarily justified by traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. The evidence rating is low due to the lack of targeted studies and clinical data.
