Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Litsea, particularly Litsea cubeba (also known as May Chang), is primarily used in traditional medicine and aromatherapy for skin-related issues, including acne. The essential oil extracted from Litsea cubeba has a fresh, lemon-like fragrance and is used topically in diluted forms. Its traditional use is based on anecdotal evidence and its reputation for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are desirable in the management of acne. In various Asian traditional medicine systems, Litsea has been used as a skin cleanser and to reduce inflammation.

Scientifically, there are only a few in vitro studies suggesting that Litsea cubeba essential oil exhibits antibacterial activity against certain skin pathogens, including Propionibacterium acnes, which is associated with acne development. However, robust clinical studies in humans are lacking. The concentration and method of application, as well as potential skin irritation, have not been adequately studied. Thus, while there is some plausibility for its use based on traditional accounts and preliminary laboratory data, the overall quality of evidence is low, and its efficacy or safety for treating acne is not established by modern scientific standards.
