Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Nicotinamide (also known as niacinamide), a form of vitamin B3, has scientific validation for its use in the support and treatment of acne. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy, particularly when used topically. Nicotinamide is known to possess anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce the redness and inflammation associated with acne lesions. It also helps regulate sebum production and improves the skin barrier function, both of which are important in acne management.

Randomized controlled trials have shown that topical 4% nicotinamide gel is comparable to 1% clindamycin gel in reducing acne lesions, with fewer side effects and a lower risk of promoting antibiotic resistance (Draelos et al., 1995; Khodaeiani et al., 2013). Oral nicotinamide has also been studied but is less common due to the potential for side effects at higher doses. Topical use is well-tolerated and widely recommended as an adjunct or alternative to antibiotics for mild to moderate acne.

In summary, nicotinamide’s use for acne is supported by scientific evidence, particularly for topical formulations. It is considered a safe and effective option for many patients.
