Evidence supporting the use of: Provence Rose
For the health condition: Acne
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Provence Rose (Rosa centifolia) has been traditionally used in skincare for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and mild astringent properties. In historical and folk medicine, rose extracts and rose water have been applied topically to calm skin irritation, reduce redness, and gently cleanse. These traditional uses form the basis for its inclusion in some acne care regimens, particularly for sensitive skin types. The rationale is that its astringency may help reduce oiliness, and its anti-inflammatory compounds (such as flavonoids and tannins) might soothe inflamed lesions.
However, scientific validation for the effectiveness of Provence Rose specifically in treating or significantly improving acne is limited. Few studies have directly investigated Rosa centifolia extracts for acne. Most available data are extrapolated from broader research on rose species or from its general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in vitro. These findings are not robust enough to confirm clinical efficacy for acne. As such, its use is primarily supported by tradition and anecdotal reports rather than strong scientific evidence.
