Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Soapberry (Sapindus mukorossi), also known as soapnut, has a long history of traditional use in various cultures, especially in South and East Asia, as a natural cleanser for skin and hair. In traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine, soapberry has been used to address skin conditions, including acne, largely due to its saponin content, which produces a natural lather and is believed to cleanse the skin of excess oil and impurities. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of soapberry for acne treatment are limited. A few in vitro studies suggest that saponins from soapberry may possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically benefit acne-prone skin by reducing bacterial load and inflammation. Despite these potential mechanisms, clinical trials in humans for acne management are lacking. Therefore, the use of soapberry for acne is primarily supported by traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. Its role as a gentle cleanser may be beneficial for some individuals, but claims regarding its effectiveness in treating or preventing acne remain largely anecdotal and unsubstantiated by high-quality research.
