Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Terpenoids, also known as isoprenoids, are a large class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from terpenes. Several plant-derived terpenoids have been investigated for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are relevant to acne treatment. Notably, tea tree oil (rich in the terpenoid terpinen-4-ol) has been studied for its effects on acne. Some randomized controlled trials and in vitro studies suggest that certain terpenoids can inhibit the growth of Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes), the bacterium implicated in acne pathogenesis, and reduce skin inflammation.

However, the evidence is still limited and often specific to isolated compounds (like terpinen-4-ol or carvacrol) rather than the whole class of terpenoids. There is a lack of large-scale, high-quality clinical trials directly assessing the efficacy of "terpenoids (unspecified)" as an acne treatment. Most studies focus on specific terpenoid-rich plant extracts or oils rather than the broad class of terpenoids. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for the use of certain terpenoids against acne, the general use of "terpenoid (unspecified)" for acne is only weakly supported by the current evidence.
