One of the most well-known "Tree" ingredients used for acne is tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil. There is scientific evidence supporting the use of tea tree oil in the treatment of mild to moderate acne. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have evaluated topical tea tree oil preparations. For example, a 1990 study published in the Medical Journal of Australia found that a 5% tea tree oil gel was as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide in reducing both inflamed and non-inflamed acne lesions, although the onset of action was slower. Another 2007 study in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology showed that tea tree oil gel significantly reduced both the number and severity of acne lesions compared to placebo. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil, particularly its active component terpinen-4-ol, are thought to contribute to its efficacy. However, studies generally show only modest effects, and some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions. While tea tree oil is widely available in over-the-counter acne products, more large-scale and standardized studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety profile, especially in comparison to standard acne treatments.
