Vitamin B3, also known as niacinamide or nicotinamide, has scientific evidence supporting its use in the treatment of acne. Topical niacinamide has been shown in several clinical studies to improve acne severity, particularly inflammatory lesions. Its mechanism appears to involve anti-inflammatory effects, reduction of sebum production, and improvement of skin barrier function. Notably, a double-blind study published in the "International Journal of Dermatology" (1995) demonstrated that a 4% niacinamide gel was comparable in efficacy to a 1% clindamycin gel for the treatment of moderate inflammatory acne. Additional studies have replicated these findings, showing reductions in lesion count and severity with topical niacinamide formulations. While oral niacinamide has been less studied for acne, the topical application is well-tolerated, with a low risk of irritation or adverse effects compared to some other acne medications. Although more research is needed to optimize formulations and confirm long-term benefits, the existing scientific literature provides a strong rationale for the inclusion of vitamin B3—specifically niacinamide—as a supportive treatment in acne management.
