Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mushrooms, particularly certain species such as Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake), and Coriolus versicolor (Turkey Tail), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in East Asia, for supporting immune function. This traditional use has occasionally extended to conditions characterized by immune deficiency, including Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The rationale is largely based on the belief that bioactive compounds in mushrooms, such as beta-glucans and polysaccharides, can modulate immune responses.

However, while laboratory studies have demonstrated some immunomodulatory and antiviral effects of mushroom extracts in vitro and in animal models, robust clinical evidence in humans with HIV/AIDS remains limited and inconclusive. Some small, preliminary trials have investigated the use of specific mushroom extracts as adjunctive therapy in HIV-positive individuals, but results have been mixed and not widely replicated. There are no major clinical guidelines recommending mushrooms as a standard treatment for AIDS, and their use is primarily rooted in traditional and complementary medicine practices rather than rigorous scientific validation. Overall, the traditional basis for their use is much stronger than the current scientific evidence.
