Evidence supporting the use of: Reishi
For the health condition: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for enhancing overall health and longevity, as well as for “immune support.” Its use in the context of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is based primarily on traditional beliefs that it can "boost the immune system" or "increase vitality" in those who are immunocompromised. There are some laboratory and animal studies suggesting that Reishi may have immunomodulatory effects, such as influencing cytokine production and stimulating certain immune cells. However, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for HIV/AIDS patients is extremely limited and of poor quality. Only a few small, preliminary clinical studies have explored Reishi or its extracts in HIV-positive individuals, and these studies typically suffer from methodological issues, small sample sizes, and lack of robust clinical endpoints. No major health organization currently recommends Reishi as part of AIDS therapy. Thus, the use of Reishi for AIDS is largely rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation, and the overall quality and quantity of evidence supporting its use for this condition is very low.
