Evidence supporting the use of: 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)
For the health condition: Addictions (general remedies for)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor in the biosynthesis of serotonin. Its use in addiction support is primarily justified by scientific rationale, though the quality and quantity of supporting evidence are limited, meriting a low to moderate rating. The rationale lies in the role of serotonin in regulating mood, impulse control, and reward pathways—factors often disrupted in addiction. Animal studies and some small human trials suggest that boosting serotonin with 5-HTP may reduce cravings and addictive behaviors, particularly in alcohol, cocaine, and food addiction. For example, a few studies have examined 5-HTP in combination with other amino acids and micronutrients, reporting reductions in withdrawal symptoms and cravings in alcoholics and cocaine users. However, these studies are often small, lack rigorous controls, or combine 5-HTP with other substances, making it difficult to isolate its specific effect. There is also theoretical support based on the serotonin deficiency hypothesis in addiction. Nevertheless, comprehensive clinical trials are lacking, and systematic reviews conclude that the evidence is preliminary. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and some limited empirical support, 5-HTP is not an established or widely recommended treatment for addiction. Caution is advised, and individuals should consult healthcare professionals before using 5-HTP for this purpose.
