Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Albizia julibrissin, commonly known as silk tree or mimosa, is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, the bark and flowers (He Huan Pi and He Huan Hua) are considered to have calming and mood-lifting properties. They are used to "calm the spirit" and relieve emotional constraint, insomnia, and mild depression. There are anecdotal reports and some traditional herbal formulas that include Albizia julibrissin for people experiencing withdrawal symptoms or emotional distress associated with various addictions, such as opiate or alcohol dependence. However, there is little direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness for addiction management. The use for addiction is based on the general application of Albizia julibrissin for mood disorders and emotional well-being rather than targeted anti-addictive mechanisms. Scientific studies on Albizia julibrissin largely focus on its anxiolytic, antidepressant, and neuroprotective effects in animal models, with very limited research on addiction specifically. Thus, its use for addiction is traditional, with a low level of evidence, mostly extrapolated from its reputed mood-stabilizing effects rather than from direct scientific validation.
