Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aromatherapy has a long-standing traditional use as a complementary remedy to support individuals managing addictions, especially in the context of stress, cravings, and withdrawal symptoms. Essential oils such as lavender, bergamot, and black pepper have been used in folk practices and some modern holistic programs to promote relaxation, improve mood, and reduce anxiety, all of which can indirectly support addiction recovery. For example, black pepper oil has been used in traditional remedies for smoking cessation, with anecdotal claims that inhaling its vapor can reduce cigarette cravings. However, robust scientific validation for these uses is limited. A few small studies (e.g., Rose & Behm, 1994) suggest that black pepper vapor may temporarily reduce cigarette cravings, but sample sizes are small and methodologies often lack rigor. Most claims regarding aromatherapy for addiction are based on tradition and practitioner experience rather than large-scale clinical trials. Therefore, while aromatherapy is widely used in complementary and alternative medicine for supporting addiction recovery, the evidence base is weak and primarily anecdotal. It should not replace established medical or psychological treatments for addiction, but may be considered as an adjunct to enhance well-being during recovery.
