Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

DL-Phenylalanine (DLPA) is sometimes used as a remedy to support the treatment of various addictions, particularly for its potential effects on mood and reward pathways. The rationale is that DLPA, a mixture of the D- and L- forms of the amino acid phenylalanine, may increase levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and endorphins, both of which are involved in reward, pleasure, and mood regulation. Some small clinical studies and animal research suggest that DLPA may help reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings by supporting neurotransmitter balance. For example, the D-form is thought to inhibit enzymes that break down endorphins, while the L-form is a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine.

However, the overall scientific evidence is limited and of low quality. Most studies are small, dated, or lack rigorous controls. There is no strong consensus in the mainstream medical literature supporting DLPA as a primary or adjunct treatment for addiction. It has been explored mostly as part of broader amino acid or nutritional protocols. Major reviews and guidelines do not recommend DLPA as a standard therapy for addiction treatment. While the theoretical rationale is plausible and there are some preliminary findings, robust clinical trials are lacking. Further research is needed to clarify its effectiveness and safety in this context.
