Evidence supporting the use of: Hemp
For the health condition: Addictions (general remedies for)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hemp has a long history of traditional use for various ailments, including as a remedy for addictions, particularly in traditional and folk medicine systems in Asia and parts of Africa. The seeds, oil, and various extracts from the hemp plant have been incorporated into traditional remedies, with anecdotal reports suggesting use for calming anxiety, promoting relaxation, and supporting withdrawal from substances like alcohol or opiates. However, these uses are largely based on traditional knowledge and have not been robustly validated by modern science.
Scientific research on hemp (distinct from high-THC cannabis) and its role in addiction treatment is limited. Most modern studies focus on cannabidiol (CBD), which can be derived from hemp, and its potential in managing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. While preliminary studies on CBD show some promise, especially for opioid, tobacco, and cannabis use disorders, the evidence is still emerging and mostly involves small sample sizes or animal studies. There are few, if any, rigorous clinical trials specifically using hemp preparations for addiction treatment. Thus, while hemp's use in addiction support is rooted in tradition, scientific validation remains weak.
