Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) have been used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for a variety of ailments, including as a purported aid for tobacco cessation. In some cultures, cloves are chewed as a substitute for tobacco or betel nut, with the belief that their strong flavor and numbing effect can help reduce cravings and oral fixation associated with tobacco use. The main compound in cloves, eugenol, provides a numbing sensation which may temporarily distract from the urge to smoke or chew tobacco.

However, scientific evidence supporting the use of cloves specifically for treating tobacco addiction is extremely limited. There are no robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies validating cloves as an effective aid for cessation of tobacco smoking or chewing. The traditional use appears to be based more on anecdotal experience and the sensory properties of cloves rather than pharmacological action against nicotine addiction.

In summary, while cloves have a history of traditional use as an oral substitute for tobacco products, there is little scientific validation for their efficacy in treating addiction. Their use for this purpose should be regarded as primarily traditional, with weak supporting evidence.
