Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Nicotine is scientifically validated for use in supporting the treatment of tobacco addiction, primarily through nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). NRT includes products such as nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, inhalers, and nasal sprays, which deliver controlled doses of nicotine to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings associated with quitting smoking or chewing tobacco. Numerous systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including those by the Cochrane Collaboration, have shown that NRT significantly increases the chances of successful smoking cessation compared to placebo or no treatment. The rationale is that it allows individuals to gradually reduce their dependence on nicotine while avoiding exposure to the harmful combustion products found in tobacco smoke or the carcinogens present in smokeless tobacco.

Clinical guidelines from major health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), endorse NRT as a first-line pharmacological intervention for tobacco use disorder. The evidence base includes randomized controlled trials and long-term follow-up studies demonstrating improved quit rates with NRT use. Importantly, NRT is intended as a transitional tool to eventually achieve complete nicotine abstinence; it is not a long-term substitute for tobacco use. In summary, the use of nicotine to support the treatment of tobacco addiction is strongly supported by scientific evidence, with a well-established efficacy and safety profile in this context.
