Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Arisaema species, commonly known as "Jack-in-the-pulpit" or "cobra lily," have been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), species like Arisaema erubescens (Tian Nan Xing) are used for their purported properties of dispelling phlegm, reducing swelling, and alleviating "toxins." Adenitis, which refers to inflammation of the lymph nodes, is sometimes addressed in TCM with herbs that "clear heat" and "resolve swelling," and Arisaema is occasionally included in such formulations. The traditional rationale is based on the herb's reputed ability to address swelling and nodular conditions, which may symbolically correspond to lymphadenitis (adenitis). However, there is a lack of robust scientific research specifically validating Arisaema's efficacy for adenitis. Most available studies focus on its anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities in vitro or in animal models, and do not directly address lymph node inflammation in humans. Furthermore, Arisaema tubers are toxic when raw and must be processed carefully for safe use, according to traditional protocols. Overall, the use of Arisaema for adenitis is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine practices, with little direct scientific evidence for this specific indication.
