Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been used in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for its purported anti-inflammatory, soothing, and immune-modulating properties. In these traditional contexts, licorice root is often used to "clear heat and toxins," which historically has included addressing swollen glands or inflamed lymph nodes—a symptom characteristic of adenitis. While traditional herbalists might recommend licorice root as part of a broader formula to support the body's response to infections or inflammation, the direct application specifically for adenitis is more inferred from its general use in treating "swellings" or "inflammations" rather than from targeted historical documentation.

From a scientific standpoint, licorice root contains active compounds such as glycyrrhizin and liquiritigenin, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects in laboratory studies. However, there is little to no direct clinical research evaluating the efficacy of licorice root for adenitis in humans. Most available evidence pertains to its broader immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory actions, rather than any specific benefit for lymph node inflammation.
