Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Paris polyphylla, commonly known as "Herb Paris" or "Chonglou" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for treating inflammatory conditions, including adenitis (inflammation of glands, especially lymph nodes). In classical TCM texts, Paris polyphylla is described as possessing "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, and it is commonly incorporated in herbal formulas for managing abscesses, boils, and swollen glands. The traditional rationale is that the saponins and other constituents in the rhizome help "resolve toxicity" and reduce swelling.
While in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Paris polyphylla possess certain anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, direct scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating adenitis in humans is limited. Most of the support comes from traditional use, case reports, and empirical clinical practice within TCM. There are no high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically evaluating its effect on adenitis. Therefore, its use for this condition is best characterized as being based on traditional practice, with some preliminary pharmacological support but insufficient rigorous clinical validation.
