Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Animal tissue extracts, particularly from the adrenal cortex of animals (often bovine sources), have been traditionally used in "glandular therapy" or "organotherapy" to support adrenal function. This practice dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before the isolation and synthesis of specific adrenal hormones such as cortisol. Proponents believed that consuming dried adrenal cortex from animals could support or "nourish" the corresponding human organs, especially in cases of adrenal insufficiency or fatigue. However, the scientific evidence supporting such claims is limited and outdated. Modern medicine has largely abandoned this approach due to a lack of rigorous clinical trials demonstrating efficacy, as well as potential safety concerns (such as prion disease transmission or immune reactions). Instead, evidence-based treatments for adrenal insufficiency rely on synthetic or purified hormone replacement. Systematic reviews and regulatory agencies do not support the use of animal adrenal tissue supplements for adrenal health. Thus, while the use of animal tissue for adrenal support is grounded in historical tradition, it lacks substantial scientific validation.
