Evidence supporting the use of: Glandular Tissues
For the body system: Adrenal Cortex
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Glandular tissues, particularly extracts from animal adrenal glands, have a long history of use in traditional and alternative medicine to support the adrenal cortex and overall adrenal function. This practice, often referred to as "glandular therapy" or "organotherapy," is based on the concept that consuming animal glandular tissues can help nourish and support the corresponding human organs. Historically, proponents believed that adrenal gland extracts could help with adrenal fatigue, stress, and related endocrine issues. However, scientific validation is limited. While animal-derived adrenal extracts were once used as a crude source of adrenal hormones before synthetic versions were available, modern medicine now relies on purified and standardized hormone replacement therapies. Most clinical guidelines do not recommend glandular extracts due to insufficient evidence of efficacy and concerns about safety, purity, and potential prion or pathogen transmission. Overall, the use of glandular tissue for adrenal support persists in some naturopathic and traditional circles, but robust clinical trials or scientific studies substantiating its effectiveness are lacking. Thus, its justification is primarily traditional rather than scientific.
