Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has a long history of traditional use as a calming herb to address symptoms related to stress, anxiety, and insomnia. In the context of so-called "adrenal fatigue"—a term not formally recognized in conventional medicine but often used in alternative health circles to describe symptoms like chronic fatigue, brain fog, and stress—chamomile may be recommended for its gentle sedative and anxiolytic effects. Traditionally, herbalists have suggested that by reducing stress and improving sleep quality, chamomile may indirectly support the adrenal glands, which are thought to be "overworked" in adrenal fatigue. However, there is no direct historical or scientific evidence that chamomile specifically treats adrenal fatigue or modulates adrenal gland function. Most of the support comes from chamomile’s well-documented traditional use as a mild relaxant, which can help manage stress-related symptoms. Scientific studies have shown chamomile’s efficacy in reducing anxiety and improving sleep, but not in treating adrenal fatigue itself. Thus, its use for adrenal fatigue is based on tradition and extrapolation rather than targeted clinical research or recognized medical guidelines.
