Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oriental Ginseng, more accurately known as Panax ginseng, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine as a general tonic, including for symptoms that might today be referred to as "adrenal fatigue" (such as low energy, stress, and poor resilience). The concept of "adrenal fatigue" itself is not recognized by most mainstream medical organizations, and there is limited direct scientific study of Panax ginseng for this specific condition. However, Panax ginseng is classified as an adaptogen in traditional medicine, meaning it is believed to enhance the body’s resistance to stress and promote overall vitality. Some small clinical trials and animal studies suggest that Panax ginseng may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, modulate cortisol levels, and reduce subjective feelings of fatigue, but these findings are not specific to "adrenal fatigue" as a clinical diagnosis. Thus, while traditional use is substantial and there is some scientific rationale for its general anti-fatigue and stress-modulating effects, robust clinical evidence specifically supporting its use for "adrenal fatigue" is lacking. Most references to its use for this condition are rooted in traditional and integrative medicine literature rather than rigorous clinical trials.
