Evidence supporting the use of: Relora® (proprietary)
For the health condition: Adrenal Fatigue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Relora® is a proprietary blend of extracts from Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense. Its use to support or treat "Adrenal Fatigue" is primarily justified by modern scientific rationale and some preliminary studies, rather than tradition. "Adrenal Fatigue" itself is not an officially recognized medical diagnosis, but is commonly referenced in alternative and integrative medicine circles to describe symptoms such as fatigue, stress, and sleep disturbance, purportedly due to chronic stress and suboptimal adrenal function.
Several small, placebo-controlled clinical trials have investigated Relora® for its effects on stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels. For example, a 2013 study (Talbott et al.) found that Relora® supplementation in moderately stressed adults resulted in lower salivary cortisol levels and improvements in stress and mood parameters compared to placebo. Another study (Kalman et al., 2008) reported that Relora® reduced transient anxiety and helped maintain normal salivary cortisol patterns in premenopausal women. However, these studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and focus on subjective outcomes. There is no direct evidence that Relora® "treats" adrenal fatigue as a disease entity, but it may help reduce perceived stress and support normal cortisol function.
Traditionally, Magnolia and Phellodendron bark have been used in Chinese medicine for symptoms like anxiety and irritability, but not specifically for adrenal-related conditions. Therefore, while some scientific evidence exists, it is preliminary and indirect, meriting a rating of 2/5 for supporting its use in "Adrenal Fatigue".
