Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Russia, Scandinavia, and China to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stressors. In recent decades, scientific interest has grown regarding its potential to support symptoms associated with so-called "adrenal fatigue," a non-medical term used to describe a cluster of symptoms such as fatigue, stress intolerance, and reduced cognitive function, often attributed to chronic stress and hypothesized dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Several clinical studies and reviews suggest Rhodiola may reduce fatigue and improve stress resilience in individuals under chronic stress. For example, randomized controlled trials have found that Rhodiola supplementation can decrease symptoms of stress and fatigue in otherwise healthy adults. Additionally, it appears to modulate cortisol levels and support normal HPA axis function. However, "adrenal fatigue" is not recognized as a medical diagnosis, and there is no direct evidence that Rhodiola treats a specific adrenal disorder. Most evidence supports its general antistress and anti-fatigue effects rather than correction of an adrenal gland pathology. Therefore, while there is some scientific evidence supporting Rhodiola’s use for symptoms attributed to "adrenal fatigue," this is largely based on its effect on stress-related fatigue and not on treating a defined medical condition.
