Evidence supporting the use of: Schizandrol A
For the health condition: Adrenal Fatigue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Schizandrol A is a bioactive compound found in Schisandra chinensis, a berry used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In traditional practice, Schisandra is considered an "adaptogen," a class of herbs believed to help the body resist stress and restore balance, including supporting adrenal function. The concept of "adrenal fatigue," however, is not recognized in conventional medicine or TCM, but the symptoms described—such as fatigue, poor stress tolerance, and low energy—have been historically managed with Schisandra preparations.
Scientific studies on Schizandrol A specifically are limited. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Schisandra, which contain Schizandrol A, may help modulate stress responses, possibly via effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and by reducing markers of oxidative stress. However, clinical trials in humans are sparse, and none directly address "adrenal fatigue." Thus, while there is a long history of traditional use for stress and fatigue, scientific validation for Schizandrol A’s efficacy in supporting or treating “adrenal fatigue” is weak and largely extrapolated from broader research on adaptogens and Schisandra extracts.
In summary, the use of Schizandrol A for adrenal fatigue is grounded in traditional herbal practices, with limited scientific support and no direct clinical evidence specific to this condition.
