Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin C (sodium ascorbate)
For the health condition: Adrenal Fatigue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Vitamin C, particularly in the form of sodium ascorbate, has been traditionally used to support the adrenal glands, especially in alternative and naturopathic medicine circles that recognize the concept of "adrenal fatigue." The rationale is based on the observation that the adrenal glands have a high concentration of vitamin C and that vitamin C is involved in the synthesis of adrenal hormones such as cortisol. Historical references cite that stress depletes vitamin C levels, and that supplementation may assist adrenal function. However, "adrenal fatigue" is not recognized as a valid medical diagnosis by mainstream medicine, and robust scientific studies to support the use of vitamin C for this condition are lacking. While there is evidence that vitamin C is essential for normal adrenal gland function and that severe deficiency can affect adrenal hormone production, there is no high-quality clinical evidence that vitamin C supplementation treats or reverses so-called "adrenal fatigue." Most scientific studies focus on vitamin C’s role in stress response in animals or its general antioxidant properties rather than direct, controlled trials in humans with "adrenal fatigue." Therefore, the use of sodium ascorbate for this purpose is justified more by tradition and theoretical reasoning than by strong scientific validation.
