Evidence supporting the use of: Animal Tissue
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Animal tissue, specifically adrenal gland extracts (also known as "adrenal glandulars"), has traditionally been used in naturopathic and alternative medicine to support adrenal gland function and address symptoms associated with "adrenal fatigue" or low energy. These practices are rooted in the historical belief that consuming organs from healthy animals can provide nutrients and factors that may benefit the corresponding organ systems in humans. In the early- to mid-20th century, desiccated adrenal extracts were briefly used in mainstream medicine before synthetic corticosteroids were developed. However, there is very limited scientific evidence supporting their efficacy. Most modern clinical research does not validate the use of animal adrenal tissue for adrenal support in humans, and the concept of "adrenal fatigue" itself is not recognized by conventional medicine. Some animal studies and very old reports suggested the presence of nutritional factors or hormones in glandular extracts, but these have not translated into robust clinical evidence. Today, use persists primarily in traditional and alternative health practices rather than being based on scientific validation.
