Evidence supporting the use of: Antler horn
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Antler horn, also known as deer antler velvet, has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other traditional systems for centuries. It is believed in these traditions to support various aspects of vitality, stamina, and overall wellbeing, and is sometimes referenced as a tonic for the kidneys and adrenal system. However, the traditional texts do not always specifically mention the "adrenal glands" as understood in modern anatomy and physiology, but rather link antler horn to general endocrine and energy-supporting functions.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited research investigating the direct effects of antler horn or deer antler velvet on adrenal gland function in humans. Some studies have explored its effects on fatigue, stress, and athletic performance, but these are often small, preliminary, or animal-based, and do not directly measure adrenal gland activity or hormones like cortisol. As such, the evidence that antler horn supports the adrenal glands specifically is weak and largely extrapolated from broader claims about vitality and stress adaptation made in traditional systems. Accordingly, while its use for adrenal support is rooted in tradition, there is insufficient scientific validation for this specific application.
