Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamins, particularly the B vitamins (such as B5 and B6), vitamin C, and sometimes vitamin E, are commonly included in "adrenal support blends." The scientific rationale for their inclusion stems from the established roles these vitamins play in stress response and adrenal gland function. The adrenal glands are responsible for producing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which mediate the body's response to stress. Vitamin C is highly concentrated in the adrenal cortex and is consumed rapidly during periods of stress, with studies indicating that adequate vitamin C is essential for proper adrenal hormone production. B vitamins, especially B5 (pantothenic acid), are involved in the biosynthesis of coenzyme A, critical for steroid hormone production in the adrenals. Some clinical and animal studies suggest that deficiencies in these vitamins can impair adrenal function and that supplementation may help restore normal hormonal responses to stress. However, while the biological mechanisms are well established, high-quality human trials specifically demonstrating that vitamin blends enhance adrenal function or alleviate "adrenal fatigue" in healthy individuals are limited. Most evidence supports their use in correcting deficiencies, rather than providing benefits in well-nourished populations. Thus, while there is scientific support for the role of vitamins in adrenal health, the strength of evidence for supplementation in the absence of deficiency is moderate.
