Evidence supporting the use of: Bovine protein
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bovine protein, particularly in the form of bovine adrenal gland extracts, has historically been used in traditional and alternative medicine to support adrenal gland function. This practice is rooted in the concept of "like supports like," a belief that consuming the organs of animals can help support the same organ in humans. In the early to mid-20th century, glandular therapy—including the use of bovine adrenal extracts—was more common, especially before the synthesis of corticosteroid medications. However, scientific validation for these practices is extremely limited.
There are no high-quality clinical trials demonstrating that bovine protein or adrenal extracts effectively support or enhance human adrenal gland function. Most modern medical professionals do not recommend glandular supplements due to a lack of evidence and potential safety concerns. Regulatory agencies such as the FDA do not approve glandular supplements for the treatment or support of adrenal health. In summary, while there is a tradition behind the use of bovine adrenal extracts for adrenal support, there is little to no robust scientific evidence to substantiate their efficacy.
