Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

California Spikenard (Aralia californica), also known as elk clover, has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine among Native American tribes and herbalists in the western United States. Traditionally, its root was used as a tonic, particularly for respiratory and immune system complaints, but some herbalists have also suggested its use for supporting the adrenal glands due to its reputed adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens are substances believed to help the body resist stressors, theoretically benefiting adrenal health. However, there is no robust scientific evidence or clinical trials supporting California Spikenard's efficacy for adrenal support. Most references to its use for adrenal health are anecdotal or appear in herbalist literature without rigorous documentation or modern research validation. Therefore, while it is sometimes included in herbal protocols for adrenal support based on tradition, the quality and quantity of evidence is very limited, and its use for this purpose should be considered speculative.
