Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Chinese Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is considered a harmonizing herb that supports various body systems, including the adrenal glands. In TCM, licorice is thought to tonify Qi (vital energy) and is often included in formulas to enhance the effects of other herbs and to alleviate stress and fatigue, which are associated with adrenal function.
The rationale for using licorice to support adrenal glands in modern herbalism primarily stems from its content of glycyrrhizin, a compound that can inhibit the breakdown of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone produced by the adrenal cortex. By slowing cortisol metabolism, licorice root is believed to help sustain higher cortisol levels, which theoretically could support individuals with low adrenal output (sometimes referred to as "adrenal fatigue," although this is not a recognized medical diagnosis).
While there are some animal and preliminary human studies showing licorice’s effects on cortisol metabolism and anti-inflammatory properties, robust clinical trials confirming its efficacy for general adrenal support are lacking. Most evidence in this regard is anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than modern scientific validation. It is important to note that excessive or prolonged use of licorice can cause significant side effects, including hypertension and hypokalemia, due to its mineralocorticoid-like activity.
