Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Ligustrum berry, also known as Ligustrum lucidum or "Nu Zhen Zi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is primarily used based on traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM, Ligustrum berries are categorized as a yin tonic and are thought to nourish the liver and kidneys, support longevity, and help the body adapt to stressors, which has led to their inclusion in some herbal formulas aimed at supporting adrenal health. The connection to the adrenal glands is, however, indirect; TCM does not specifically reference the "adrenal glands" as understood in Western physiology, but the concept of supporting the body's response to stress overlaps somewhat with the Western idea of adrenal support.

Scientific research on Ligustrum lucidum has mostly focused on its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective properties rather than direct effects on the adrenal glands or the endocrine system. There is a scarcity of clinical trials or mechanistic studies demonstrating a direct benefit for adrenal function or disorders such as adrenal fatigue. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation specifically for adrenal gland support is limited. The evidence rating reflects the strong historical use but lack of direct scientific evidence for this particular body system.
