Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese orchid
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese orchid, commonly referring to species such as Dendrobium, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Shihu" (石斛). In TCM, Dendrobium is believed to nourish Yin, benefit the stomach, and moisten dryness. While the adrenal glands themselves are not a direct concept in TCM, Dendrobium is sometimes used in formulations intended to address symptoms that could be interpreted as adrenal fatigue in Western terms, such as fatigue, weakness, and dryness.
However, scientific research directly linking Dendrobium or other Chinese orchids to adrenal gland function is limited. Some studies have investigated the plant’s antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties, but these do not specifically address support for the adrenal glands. The traditional use for "fatigue" or "weakness" is often cited, but this is not the same as clinically validated support for adrenal health as understood in modern physiology. Therefore, while there is robust traditional backing for its use in general vitality and energy, scientific validation for its specific effect on adrenal glands is lacking.
In summary, the use of Chinese orchid for adrenal gland support is rooted in traditional practices rather than modern scientific evidence.
