Evidence supporting the use of: Cholesterol
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Cholesterol plays a crucial physiological role in the functioning of the adrenal glands. The adrenal cortex synthesizes steroid hormones—such as cortisol, aldosterone, and androgens—using cholesterol as the primary substrate. This biochemical pathway is well-established in endocrinology: cholesterol is imported into adrenal cortical cells, converted to pregnenolone by the enzyme CYP11A1 in the mitochondria, and then further processed into various steroid hormones, which are essential for stress response, metabolism, and electrolyte balance. Scientific studies and medical textbooks confirm that limited cholesterol availability can impair adrenal steroidogenesis. In fact, patients with disorders affecting cholesterol transport or synthesis often suffer from adrenal insufficiency. Nevertheless, in healthy individuals, the body tightly regulates cholesterol homeostasis, and dietary cholesterol intake is typically not a limiting factor for adrenal function. There is no substantial scientific evidence that supplementing cholesterol beyond normal dietary intake provides additional support to adrenal health in the general population. However, the fundamental role of cholesterol as a building block for adrenal steroid hormones is scientifically validated.
