Rating (out of 5): 2

Chuchuhuasi (Maytenus krukovii or Maytenus laevis) is a large Amazonian tree whose bark has been traditionally used by indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest. Its applications are diverse, including as a general tonic, remedy for rheumatism, and for supporting stamina and vitality. In the context of supporting the adrenal glands, the traditional use mainly centers around its reputation as an “adaptogen,” a term used for herbs believed to help the body cope with stress. The connection between Chuchuhuasi and the adrenal glands arises from this adaptogenic claim, as the adrenal glands are chiefly responsible for stress hormone production (such as cortisol). There is, however, only limited scientific research directly linking Chuchuhuasi to adrenal gland support. Most available studies focus on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, as well as some antioxidant potential. References to its “adrenal support” are found primarily in traditional Amazonian herbal medicine and among herbalists citing anecdotal evidence. No robust clinical trials or biochemical studies have directly demonstrated Chuchuhuasi’s effect on adrenal cortex function or hormone levels. Thus, its use for adrenal support is primarily justified by ethnobotanical tradition rather than scientific validation.
