Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Codonopsis, also known as "Dang Shen" or Codonopsis pilosula, is a traditional herb in Chinese medicine commonly regarded as a gentler substitute for Panax ginseng. Its historical use has centered on supporting general vitality, energy, and immune function, rather than specifically targeting the adrenal glands. However, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners often associate Codonopsis with strengthening "qi" (vital energy), which is sometimes interpreted in modern holistic circles as supporting adrenal function, especially in the context of stress and fatigue.

Despite its widespread use in traditional herbal formulas, there is limited direct scientific evidence linking Codonopsis to adrenal gland function or hormone regulation. Some animal studies indicate immunomodulatory, anti-fatigue, and adaptogenic effects, which could be loosely connected to adrenal support, but these findings do not directly demonstrate an impact on adrenal hormones such as cortisol. No robust human clinical trials have confirmed Codonopsis's efficacy in supporting adrenal health. Therefore, while Codonopsis is traditionally used to increase energy and vitality—which may be interpreted as supporting the adrenal glands—scientific validation for this specific use remains limited.
