Evidence supporting the use of: Deer
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Deer-derived products, particularly deer antler velvet, have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other Eastern medicinal systems. In these traditions, deer antler velvet is believed to support overall vitality, enhance energy, and promote recovery from fatigue—effects that are often associated with the function of the adrenal glands in modern terminology. However, the traditional use of deer products was not based on an understanding of the adrenal glands as defined in Western medicine, but rather on concepts such as "kidney yang deficiency" or general life force. In recent years, some supplement manufacturers have marketed deer antler velvet as a support for adrenal health, but direct scientific studies validating this connection are lacking. The bulk of scientific research on deer antler velvet has focused on its potential effects on athletic performance, wound healing, and immune modulation, not specifically adrenal function. While some animal studies suggest adaptogenic or anti-fatigue effects, clinical human evidence is minimal and does not directly address adrenal health. Thus, the justification for using deer to support adrenal glands is primarily traditional, with little scientific validation.
