Evidence supporting the use of: Eucommia
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Eucommia ulmoides (杜仲, Du Zhong) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is primarily valued for its ability to "tonify" the liver and kidneys and strengthen tendons and bones. In traditional herbal practice, the kidneys are often linked metaphorically to the adrenal glands, and herbs that "tonify the kidneys" are sometimes suggested by herbalists to support adrenal function. There is, however, little direct scientific evidence that Eucommia specifically supports or modulates adrenal gland function in humans. Most modern research on Eucommia focuses on its potential antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative effects, not directly on the adrenal glands or their hormones. The traditional rationale for its use to "support adrenals" stems from TCM theory rather than measured biochemical or clinical outcomes related to adrenal health. Thus, the use of Eucommia for adrenal support is justified by tradition, particularly within the context of Chinese herbalism, but has not been validated by rigorous scientific studies targeting the adrenal system specifically. Evidence rating: 2, reflecting a strong traditional basis but limited scientific corroboration for this specific use.
