Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flat-stem milk-vetch (Astragalus complanatus), closely related to the more widely studied Astragalus membranaceus, has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Astragalus species are commonly employed as "qi tonics," believed to bolster overall vitality, strengthen the body's resistance to stress, and support organ systems, including the adrenal glands, which are associated with energy and stress adaptation. However, it is important to note that the concept of adrenal gland support in TCM does not directly correspond to the Western biomedical understanding of adrenal physiology; rather, it refers more broadly to supporting the body's resilience and stamina. There is limited direct scientific research specifically examining Flat-stem milk-vetch (Astragalus complanatus) and its effects on adrenal function in humans or animals. Most of the available scientific literature focuses on Astragalus membranaceus, which contains polysaccharides and saponins that have shown adaptogenic and immunomodulatory effects in preclinical studies. These findings are sometimes extrapolated to other Astragalus species, but such generalization lacks robust evidence. Therefore, the use of Flat-stem milk-vetch for adrenal support is primarily justified by traditional use rather than scientific validation.
