Fo-Ti (Polygonum multiflorum, also known as He Shou Wu) is a traditional Chinese herbal remedy historically used for promoting longevity, vitality, and general wellness. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Fo-Ti is considered a tonic for the liver and kidneys, which are believed to govern aspects of energy, aging, and stress adaptation. While the term “adrenal glands” is not used in TCM, Fo-Ti is sometimes marketed in the West as an adaptogen or adrenal support herb due to its traditional use for fatigue and vitality.

However, scientific research specifically investigating Fo-Ti’s effects on the adrenal glands or the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is lacking. Most available studies focus on its purported anti-aging, neuroprotective, and antioxidant properties, but do not address direct support of adrenal function. The historical use of Fo-Ti as a general tonic in TCM is the primary basis for its inclusion in adrenal support formulations. No high-quality clinical trials have established its efficacy for adrenal health in Western medical terms. Thus, its use for adrenal support is based largely on tradition rather than scientific validation.
