Evidence supporting the use of: Ginsenoside
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginsenosides are the primary active compounds in ginseng (Panax species), a herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. In traditional systems, ginseng is considered an "adaptogen," a term used for substances believed to help the body resist various stressors, including those affecting the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. The traditional use of ginseng for "supporting energy" and "helping the body cope with stress" is often interpreted in modern supplement marketing as supporting adrenal health.
However, scientific evidence directly connecting ginsenosides to improved adrenal gland function in humans is limited. Some animal studies suggest that ginsenosides may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and modulate stress hormone levels, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials. Most human studies of ginseng focus on fatigue, cognitive function, and immune modulation rather than direct measurement of adrenal gland support or hormone regulation. While there is a longstanding tradition of using ginseng for overall vitality and resilience to stress, the evidence for its specific use to support the adrenal glands is therefore best categorized as traditional, with a low to moderate level of scientific support.
