Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Glandular tissues, such as extracts from animal adrenal glands, have traditionally been used in naturopathic and alternative medicine to "support" the adrenal glands and overall endocrine health. This use is based largely on the concept of "like supports like," an idea stemming from early 20th-century organotherapy, which posited that consuming animal organs or glands could strengthen the corresponding human organs. While this practice has a long history within certain alternative medicine circles, scientific validation is lacking. Modern research provides little to no robust evidence that oral glandular supplements meaningfully enhance adrenal function or hormone production in humans. Most adrenal insufficiency or fatigue is managed with well-characterized pharmaceuticals or lifestyle modifications, not glandular extracts. Regulatory agencies, such as the FDA, have not recognized glandular supplements as effective treatments for adrenal or endocrine disorders. Some safety concerns also exist regarding the purity and potential contamination of animal-derived supplements. In summary, the use of glandular tissues for adrenal support is rooted in tradition rather than scientific proof, and current scientific evidence does not substantiate their efficacy.
