Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glycyrrhizinic acid, a major active component of licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), has a long history of traditional use for supporting the adrenal glands and managing symptoms of adrenal fatigue. In traditional herbal medicine, licorice root has been employed to help the body cope with stress, presumably by supporting adrenal function and prolonging the action of endogenous cortisol. Glycyrrhizinic acid is believed to inhibit the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, which converts active cortisol to inactive cortisone, thus helping maintain cortisol levels in the body for longer periods.

However, while these mechanisms have been observed in biochemical studies, robust clinical evidence specifically supporting glycyrrhizinic acid for adrenal support in humans is limited. Most of its use for adrenal health is based on traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than high-quality randomized controlled trials. Excessive intake can lead to side effects such as hypertension and hypokalemia due to its mineralocorticoid-like effects. Overall, the evidence base is primarily traditional, with limited scientific validation, and caution is advised in its use, especially in individuals with cardiovascular or renal concerns.
