Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a caffeinated Amazonian plant traditionally brewed as a tea by indigenous peoples of Ecuador and surrounding regions. Its primary historical use is as a stimulant, largely because of its caffeine content, which is similar to or slightly less than that of coffee. Traditional uses focus on its role in increasing alertness, stamina, and energy, particularly during long hunts or periods of work. While these effects can be indirectly linked to "supporting" the adrenal glands—since caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and can prompt the adrenal glands to release stress hormones—there is little direct traditional or scientific evidence specifically addressing guayusa's role in supporting adrenal gland health or treating adrenal fatigue. The association with adrenal support in modern herbal marketing is largely extrapolated from its caffeine content and is not strongly rooted in indigenous knowledge or clinical research. Current scientific studies on guayusa focus mostly on its antioxidant properties, caffeine content, and potential metabolic effects, not on direct adrenal gland function. Therefore, while guayusa is traditionally used for energy and alertness, its use for adrenal gland support is not well-established.
