Evidence supporting the use of: Jiaogulan
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is often referred to as the "herb of immortality." Traditionally, it has been used as an adaptogen—a substance believed to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stress. The term "adaptogen" is closely tied to support for the adrenal glands, as adaptogens are thought to help balance adrenal function and regulate the body's stress response. In folk medicine, jiaogulan tea is consumed to promote vitality, reduce fatigue, and improve resilience to stress, all of which are associated with adrenal health. However, while there is limited scientific research on jiaogulan's direct effects on the adrenal glands specifically, some studies suggest it may influence stress hormone levels and have general adaptogenic properties. These studies are mostly preclinical (animal or in vitro) and do not provide robust clinical evidence for adrenal support in humans. Therefore, its use for adrenal gland support is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation. In summary, while jiaogulan is traditionally used to support the body's stress response and is sometimes marketed for adrenal health, current evidence for its efficacy in directly supporting adrenal gland function is limited and based mainly on its historical use as an adaptogen.
